A freelance skill is a focused, targetable portion of a broader freelance market in which specialized products or services can be easily sold.
It is a specialized or focused area of a broader market that freelancers can serve to differentiate themselves from other freelancers.
A lucrative freelance skill must:
Have a hungry audience,
Meet underserved or unmet needs.
Be profitable in terms of business.
Be easy to penetrate because of little to no competition.

When we’re starting, it’s always so tempting to target a broad market for more freelance clients. But to succeed as a freelancer today, you MUST do the opposite!
For me, I started getting clients when I targeted a specific audience.

Now we’re going to be covering each step in this lesson (and I’ll try to be as fast as possible so you want to jot down these ideas as quickly as possible).
Step 1: List Your Passion
As a freelancer, ask yourself;
Which topics do I happen to know a lot about?
Do you happen to know more about wealth, financing, accounting, or savings than your friends do?
Are there certain questions your friends rush to ask you when they’re lost about specific things?
Your FREELANCE SKILL is your niche.
It doesn’t matter how nice it sounds when you tell people, what matters is how much people are willing to pay you for it.
Feel free to ask your friends or email your contacts for their suggestions.
Step 2: Figuring Your Ideal Client
Your ideal client is the perfect person you want to work with.
For example, my ideal client is;
A b2b startup making 5 to 6 figures in revenue monthly.
Simple and easy to work with.
Is willing to work with me for at least 3 to 6 months (without canceling) AND...
Is willing to pay me anywhere around $500 to $3,000 monthly to write articles for them.
Final Step: Perform the Quora-Planner Hack (to confirm that people need your freelance skill)
What is the Quora-Planner Hack?
The Quora-planner hack is a simple strategy to enable service providers to confirm the validity of their skills, check the trend of their niche, and confirm that people are looking for their skills.
This will help you understand how valuable your skill currently is in the market and to ensure you don’t waste years learning freelance skills no one wants.
Now how do you use this strategy?
First, go to ads dot google dot com and sign up for a free account.
To use the Google Keyword Planner, you NEED to have a Google Ads account.
If you don’t have an Adwords account already, you can set one up in a few minutes.
On your dashboard, click the tools and settings tab and then select “Discover New Keywords” and run these 2 search strings:
[your broad market] - e.g. Freelance Writer.
[your niche market] - e.g. Freelance writer for software businesses.
Then click on Get Started.
This will reveal to you the number of times people search these keywords online.
This means, you now know how many people are interested in both your broad & niche market.
Is that correct?
Next, Let’s check Quora to see how well your niche market is performing.
What is Quora?
Quora is a question-and-answer website where questions are asked and answered by Internet users.
